Dog Caretaker

Position Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Dog Caretaker to join our team at Castles for Underdogs Home Sanctuary on a part-time, contractor basis. This position is available on an "as-needed" schedule, requiring a minimum commitment of 3-4 available hours per week. The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily care and well-being of up to 13 dogs, ensuring they receive the highest quality of attention, love, and exercise in our sanctuary environment.
Daily Care:
Provide food and fresh water to all dogs according to their specific dietary needs
Clean and sanitize living areas, including kennels, play areas, and outdoor spaces
Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians
Groom dogs, including bathing, brushing, and nail trimming as needed
Exercise and Enrichment:
Implement daily exercise routines for each dog, including walks and playtime
Organize and supervise group play sessions, ensuring safe interactions
Provide mental stimulation through toys, puzzles, and training activities
Behavioral Management:
Monitor and document each dog’s behavior and health status
Implement behavior modification plans for dogs with special needs
Assist in socializing dogs and preparing them for potential adoption
Health and Safety:
Maintain a safe and clean environment for all dogs
Recognize signs of illness or distress and report to supervisors or veterinary staff
Follow proper safety protocols when handling dogs, especially those with behavioral issues
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of feeding, medications, behaviors, and health concerns
Update dog profiles and assist in creating adoption materials
Sanitizing Protocol:
Follow a strict sanitizing schedule to prevent the spread of diseases:
Daily:
Clean food and water bowls after each meal
Disinfect kennels, including walls, floors, and surfaces
Clean up after dogs using the designated pooper scooper and trash bags, ensuring all waste is disposed of properly
Weekly:
Deep clean all living areas, including thorough disinfection of surfaces and floors
Wash and sanitize bedding
Monthly:
Perform a comprehensive deep clean of the entire facility, including all areas and equipment
Use approved disinfectants and follow manufacturer instructions for dilution and contact time
Ensure all cleaning supplies are stored safely and out of reach of dogs
Compensation:
The hourly pay rate for this position is between $15 and $20, depending on experience and qualifications.
Proven experience in caring for dogs in a professional setting, such as shelters, kennels, or veterinary clinics, or extensive experience managing a multi-dog household. A minimum of two years in either capacity is preferred.
Strong understanding of dog behavior and body language
Ability to handle multiple dogs of various sizes, breeds, and temperaments
Physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and walking for extended periods
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
Compassionate attitude and genuine love for animals
Basic computer skills for record-keeping purposes
Punctual and reliable, with a commitment to maintaining regular working hours and schedules
Work Environment:
This position requires working in both indoor and outdoor settings, exposure to various weather conditions, and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
